Part of the ennui I’ve been feeling this year has extended to my running. Yet again I’m trying to get a sub-three hour time in the Newport marathon. The training for this goal has been brutal and it hasn’t gone well. This is partly because with the marathon being in May i thought I could leave it a bit longer before I kicked the booze into touch, in retrospect I should have gone on the wagon on New Year’s Day. Also two days into 2019 I came down with a bad cold which I couldn’t shift for two weeks. I had to skip some training runs, and my old calf injury has also flared up and just to add to the giggles I picked up another cold around a fortnight ago.
So yes, it’s been frustrating, I haven’t come close to the pace I need for the marathon. I’ve dragged myself out for the runs even knowing that they’re probably going to be a grind. I suspect that’s what differentiates some who runs from a runner. Yes that comes across as smug, but last Sunday when I was on the Taff Trail on around mile 14, clomping along with my back in half something kept me going.
I’ve been hoping that the training would snap into place. I’ve got to be comfortable running at 6:40 and I haven’t come anywhere near that. My long Sunday run involves running 6 of the miles at the marathon pace, so I decided to invest in some isotonic powder to mix with my water, some energy bars and recovery drink. I’ve tried to stay away from the isotonic drinks cause they’ve had some - errr - detrimental effects on me on the past but I needed some advantage.
I faffed around putting the long run off especially as the weather was filthy, but eventually I dragged myself out. It didn’t look good initially. I had to stop twice on the first marathon mile as I was coughing so much gunk up (sorry to be indelicate), but after that it picked up. I got soaked, dry, wet again then sorta damp. I ran out to past the Radyr Weir and actually didn’t feel too bad. I felt better in the second half of the run than I did at the beginning and actually had something left in the tank at the end of the run.
Subsequent to this blog my time had started to get better, I bought new daps and my lower back pain was manageable. I was getting closer to my marathon pace as my training started to taper. However in the last week I’ve caught another bloody cold and come down with a bout of food poisoning. This has meant that I’ve missed another two running days. I don’t think is is my year for the sub three hour marathon…
